Portrait of Princess Sophia Matilda of Gloucester
1800
Distinguished portrait of King George III's daughter Sophia (1777-1848) attributed to the great Regency artist Sir Thomas Lawrence. Within a fine period frame possibly original. She wears a strand of coral beads around her neck and coiled around her wrist - a late 18th and early 19th century fashion.
The painting has an important provenance: it was in the collection of Baron Nathaniel Meyer von Rothschild and included in the 1903 catalogue of his extensive art collection as by Lawrence in the Palais Nathaniel Rothschild in Vienna, Austria and descended through the family. This included being seized by the Nazis (see the German label on the back) and reconstituted to the family after the Second World War.
