This exquisite animaux duck cushion is an advanced embroidery piece using crewel wool and stranded cotton on cream boiled wool with feather insert. Measures 20 inches by 20 inches.

The cushion features a duck in a fine pink dress inspired by caricaturist J.J. Grandville's illustration for Scènes de la Vie Privée et Publique des Animaux, in which celebrated writers of the 1840s such as Honoré de Balzac reveal anthropomorphic animals exemplifying and satirizing human behavior. Stitched by prisoners and prison leavers.
