This exquisite animaux cow cushion is an advanced embroidery piece using crewel wool and stranded cotton on cream boiled wool. Measures 20 inches x 20 inches.

The cushion features a cow in a tasseled dress inspired by caricaturist J.J. Grandville's illustration for Scènes de la Vie Privée et Publique des Animaux, in which celebrated writers of the 1840s such as Honoré de Balzac reveal anthropomorphic animals exemplifying and satirizing human behavior. Stitched by prisoners and prison leavers.
